stringG v3.2

New version of stringG is available with new dev design!

There is no new functionality - only design. I am reading Testing Applications on the Web (by Hung Q. Nguyen, Bob Johnson and Michael Hackett) and the chapter about design and performance made me think about software target users. So I decided that testers (and all IT users) will like so called terminal design with dark background and monospace font.
Also I am using now new text editor Atom. I'll write about it later when I get enough experience with it.

stringG v3.1

New version of String Generator with new name stringG is available!
Working with string generatorWorking with length calculator

So main new functionality is disabling not active part as You can see on pictures. When You focusing on string generating the bottom part of length calculation is shadowed. And vice versa - if You focusing on bottom part of length calculation the top part is shadowed.

One more big change - new name. Reason is simple: String Generator is too long and I believe that good name is a short one, so stringG it is.

I've already wrote previously about using LeanKit software for organizing stringG (and spanD) projects. They give full Portfolio edition free of charge for first 30 days. So meanwhile my free Portfolio edition has expired and now I am using the Basic level. I was afraid, that I'll loose a lot of good functionality, but actually I haven't lost anything - the Basic level gives all what I need for such small projects. So, if You need a tool for organizing Your tasks - LeanKit is a really good candidate.

String Generator v3.0

New version of String Generator extension is available:

Changes in last version:
  • Code refactoring according to Google Security Tips
  • Design changes
One important update in the process: this is the first version, when I tried to use agile process management tool LeanKit (I heard about it on Saturday Agile X) - really useful tool for managing small projects (maybe big too), now developing process is more organized. And nice thing that it is free of charge (basic mode).

String Generator v2.4

New version 2.4 of String Generator extension is now available in Google Store.

In latest version:
  * Code refactoring according to Uncle Bob's clean code philosophy
  * Now space is actually on 10th character (was on 11th and on 15th with umlauts)

And source code is also available on GitLab - https://gitlab.com/irina-ivanova-extensions/stringG

String Generator v2.0

Today client sent an error:
ORA-12899: value too large for column "CONTACT"
(actual:51, maximum:50)

So the CONTACT field in the base is VARCHAR2(50) and user is trying to save a value of 51 characters in it. But we have a validation for HTML field, so user can't insert more than 50 characters.

The thing is that user inserted umlaut characters (such as äöüõ) which takes more than 1 byte. Datatype VARCHAR2(50) means that it can store 50 bytes and with umlauts it means less than 50 characters. So to find this bug (in this case datatype should be VARCHAR2(50 CHAR)) I needed to test field with characters than takes more than 1 byte.

So I made a new version of String Generator 2.0 extension, which can now generate text string with umlauts:

String Generator v1.0

So today I made a new version of my Chrome extension String Generator.

Changes:
* New pattern for text string: A[x]Z (because x is more text than *), which means, that every first character is A and last is Z.
* Second textarea to calculate the length of specified string. New available test case:

Maximum length of the field is 30 and type is text. I generate the string of 30 text characters and copy-paste it into the field - the last character Z is missing. But how many characters field is actually holding? I copy-paste the string in the field into second textarea of extension and press Enter - extension calculates that length of string is 25.

String Generator v0.5

So today I made a new version of my Chrome extension String Generator.

Changes:
* Pattern for the number string was changed. Old version: 4[0]4, new version 1[0]9. Just for the logic - first character is 1, last is 9.
* Pattern for the text string: old version z[x]z, new version a[*]z.
* Was added checkbox for inserting spaces: if checkbox is checked every 10th character in the string is a space (eg a********* ***z). In old version if I needed to generate a really long string, eg 500 characters, in many views and reports it was displayed as non breakable string, which seems like not real data.

So, here is a screenshot of new version:

String Generator v0.1

As a web tester I have encountered many times with the following case (all numbers are given as an example):
The maximum length of the input field should be 50 characters. The database table column is 30 symbols. The input field actually allows to insert 500 characters.
So if the user inserts...
<= 30 symbols - it's OK.
> 50 symbols - page controls gives a message, that there is allowed only 50 symbols.
Between 31 and 50 - exception.

So, to test input fields I need to generate string with the certain length. The easiest way is to have tool that can do that. The most convenient way - to have a browser extension.

I started to look a Chrome extension, that can do that. But only tools that I could find were so called Lorem Ipsum generators. They are not suitable for me, because there is possible to specify only number of paragraphs or words, not symbols. So I decided to write my own extension, anyway, the functionality is very simple.

So, I did my first Chrome extension, which You can download in the Chrome webstore, free of charge - String Generator.

The main idea was to create a tool, where I can generate a string with minimum of clicks and buttons. So You can just open an extension, insert the number of symbols (the focus is automatically on the right field), press Enter key (there is no any buttons) and the string is generated and automatically selected, so now You can just press Ctrl+C and paste the data to your input field. So..
Icon -> insert number -> Enter -> Ctrl+C -> Ctrl+V

There are plans to make an update in the near future, so, stay tuned. Maybe I will write a little bit more about this extension and JavaScript in the next post.

Second case that can be easily tested with this extension.
